anyone have a writeup for replacement

been looking around for a straight m42 replacement writeup. im picking up an e30 with a locked up engine and probably more damage. seems it would just be easier to replace than repair.

this will be my first e30, im really a fbody guy looking for something different. never pulled a motor, but have done lots of transmission pulls/clutch/diff repairs(on fbody's). looking to test myself, but would like the comfort of a good writeup on pulling the old motor, and replacing it with another m42(pics preferred). I know it could do a 6cyl swap, but i want to keep this very simple and would like to retain the m42 since i do alot of autocross(damn rules).

any help would be greatly appreciated

I had one on e30tech a few years ago whn I did a swap for a forum member.
He is also a member here, name is cepa318is. PM him and he still might have all of the photos.

the best way is to pull the engine and tranny together out the top.

Remove the hood to do so.

One other helpful tip is that you can remove the entire engine harness still attatched to the engine.

I did plan on taking the out together. I planned on swapping clutch and fly while I was at it as well as tranny/motor mounts.I might have 2 get what I can though, it may be hard 2 find a lower mile m42 in my area. I may have 2 "settle"(haha) for a 2.8 out of a 96' 328is that I know of. that would however ruin my potential autocross plans for this car and make my first swap way more complicated

You'll still be able to autocross ;) Just in a different class hehe. Welcome to STREET MOD!

this was more for a potential moving/shuffling of the classes. I had a chance to talk to some of the SPAC members and was told that some of the mis-classed SP cars will be moved into FSP very soon(kinda like they did with the neons in FSP). I'm trying to keep this cheap and retain the chances to stay legal in SP and stock(if they ever move them down to hs, ha!)I already drive a car that is very competitive in SM, just look what I did with it in the pro solo finale results. AND, it was just an underpowered/heavy BSP evojoe s.

get real .. with a M52 swap, your fun factor will far outweigh the autocross class change.. nothing wrong with a little competition
