    turbo build thread

well i've had a version of this planned before i even know what an m42 was and had my car for a week, when i asked on bimmerforums what it would take to put a z3 4cyl motor into a 2002 (who knew three years later id be doing a crazier version of that exact thing). i was 17 and a complete 2002 newbie (had a fiero halfway 4.3 vortech swapped, and 2 half done 1961 chevy trucks). i fell in love with the 02 on a vacation to virginia and saw a beautiful polaris white 02 at my uncles neighbors. i purchased a 2002 by the end of the summer that looked like this:

completely by mistake i had bought a car with a 38/38 weber, ansa exhaust, and bilstein hd's already installed so i drove the 2002 for about a year while i gathered parts to change the look of the car to what i thought i wanted. rust removal and bodywork later i got this:

    after tint

i like the look enough, but after the m42 is done i want a sleeper :D and it will return similar to its former glory as this:

    now about that m42.....
it will have 8.5:1 (85mm bore) pistons, all arp hardware, mls headgasket, 666 fabrication manifold, holset HY35 turbo (20psi :D), megasquirt courtesy of dynotech motorsports, personally designed symmetrical intake, 850cc injectors, tial 44mm wastegate, tial 50mm BOV, mishumoto IC, m20 flywheel, etc etc. hoping conservativly for 300rwhp. the car will be completely caged but retain 90% of the original interior as this will be a daily driver all summer long :D i've also got some plans for a big rearend upgrade that someone else is working on, but im not sure how much he wants known right now.

im about halfway into the build as far as parts go and i just got serious about it a month ago so the motor should be in the car and driving by spring. the body wont look how i want quite yet but mechanically it'll be going.

    and now for the build.....
tearing the m42 out of the donor (1994 bmw 318is). got the car for $700, sold the wheels for 200, and a couple other msc items for another 100, and im still sittin on some more good parts and the shell to be scrapped, so i got the driveline pretty cheap.

    shop helper

tearing up the carpet for a new esty set reaveals some bad news!

    teardown of the motor:

    spiffied up the valve cover:

and thats where im sittin. the motor is at the machine shop being bored and honed. it should be back in the next couple days and i have everything waitin here to build the motor up and start adding some turbo goodies :D.

in the meantime i've installed a powdercoated rear subframe with IE stage two's and new bilstein HD's. this will be temporary as coilovers with be soon after the swap :D

I may be mistaken but I believe that is a M44 not a M42. Just the newer version.

nope, it's a 1994 so it would still be an M42

        Very ambitious plans! Good luck!

no, its just an e36 m42. basically the same as an e30 but with a different intake and oil pan. neither will fit an e30, nor the 02

thanks! hopefully it will be in car and running before the summer! already had the pistons and just got in all gaskets, bearings, and bolts, etc to finish the rebuild. also have bov, IC, and COP kit already. end of the month im ordering another 1500 in parts :D

i can spend about 1000-1500 each month so it should be done in no time!! :D haha optimistic thinking eh....

i can't speak for the 02 but someone on m42club used the e36 intake mani on his e30 turbo project. might be worth checking to see if it will work before you spend money on the e30 parts.

edit: i read further. looking forward to seeing custom intake design.

yeah, ive only heard that the intake cant be used, but honestly, i didn't look into it muh as a custom intake has been in the plans from the start.

as far as the build goes though, not a lot has happened. plans have hanged a bit on the timeline, as a big trip is planned this summer. this will probably push everything bak about 6 months at least. bad news is that this puts the running date in the middle of winter, when the car wont be seeing the road here in nebraska. good news though, is that on the ars virgin drive in the spring, the ar should be COMPLETED! :) (if they ever really are i guess)

currently tho, the engine is back in the machine shop as i decided to go ahead and have the block o-ringed. while it's there, the single mass european m20 flywheel is being lightened slightly (from 13lbs i believe) and balanced. when i get it back, she will be put together and mocked in the car.

as far as the chassis goes, i have a friend rollling some bars for the cage i will weld in. next purchase: rear discs, bigger fronts, and a rearend :)
