    Morning start up issue

Every winter or when it gets colder out my m42 misses and ticks loudly upon the first morning startup but then it gets quieter and fades away.

Here lately its getting worse and takes up to 45 seconds to run normal with out ticking.

Im thinking it has to do with my ignition coils / wires but im not to sure.

    cliff notes:

    -skips

    - ticks loudly

    -only on morning startups

    any suggestions?

When was the last time you replaced the timing chain tensioner?

i changed it last winter, so it cant be that.. and besides i dont think that would make my motor skip, thats why im thinking a ignition issue?

What's the mileage on your car? Ignition coils and wires usually stay calm until WOT at 5-6K rpm. I'd check all your engine sensors first. 109 U Pull It has a white M42 E30, 67 Motors on Reynolda has a '95 318ti if you do need parts.

Mine does the same thing, except it sounds like only one lifter ticking, and I'm running 15w-40. My chassis has 260k miles, I'm assuming the motor does as well.

What have the temps been there in the morning? 20w50 is pretty heavy and gets pretty viscous in colder temps. That could explain the ticking, but the missing is an ignition issue. If it's only missing when it's cold, sounds like an ECU issue. Does it still tick and miss when it's cooled down in the middle of the day (when ambient temps are warmer)?

the enigne is gone tho, I was just there... as is the 5-lug suspention, OF COURSE

Will: sounds lke lifter tap to me. Doesn't really sound like its missing, just runs a little lazy (colder air = richer warm-up enrichmant curves)

Whens the last time you changed your plugs, just 'cuz?

it doesnt knock or skip unless its been setting more than 6 hours or so in cold temps, but it rarely acts up after the first start up in the morning. if its warm, it doesnt do this at all.

changed my plugs last september - bosch +4's

its gotten down to 26ish or so here, not to cold...should i go to a lighter oil?

Down to 26? Get that molases out of the crankcase. I would go down to at least 10w40.

I have the same exact issue. I'm running 20w50 and I just changed my plugs. Hoping a lighter oil will do the trick. Mine lasts up to 7 or 8 minutes at times. The temp has been averaging around 30 at night for the past week.
