    Oil on coil pack

so while i was replacing my thermostat a few days ago i started looking around my engine and out of curiosity decided to check the coil packs. i was pulling them out one by one and noticed that one of them had oil on it. the rest were completely dry.

i've done some research online and it seems to be that the problem is almost always a bad valve cover gasket(?)

my question is: is that my problem? how did it happen and how Expensive/hard is it to fix?

    thanks.

Yup thats your issue. Just buy the valve cover gasket set and change it and good luck on the valve cover threads not needing to be heli coiled or re threaded

      good to know.

any idea on how this happened and roughly how much is it gonna cost?

Like $25. Valve cover gaskets go bad. They're constantly splashed with hot motor oil. They get brittle and lose their ability to seal.

          doesn't sound too bad.

sorry for the chain of questions but hopefully this is the last one. should i send this to a mechanic to be done or is it simple enough for me to tackle on my own?

          im replacing part #3 correct?

When you replace a valve cover, you generally replace 3, 4, and 5, plus the required quantity of #9 (these are like 40 cents each). A valve cover gasket kit will include 3 and the required number of 4 and 5.

Its real simple. Just unbolt the cover and replace the gasket. Be sure to clean both the mounting surfaces of the head and the valve cover, and be sure not to drop anything in there.

Yeah it is. It fits pretty good, but it sticks out about an inch under the fogs because of the way it is shaped. I tore it off on a curb though :(

some people at this time, also paint the v/c cover, which will add time for cleaning etc
but the main thing is to be gentle tightening the v/c bolts remeber your going into soft metal
                    mine needs 2 heli-coiled, by p.o
but its not leaking, so Ill wait until I need a new v.c g

thats the price of being low huh Byron? lol

and i agree with you 3bvert, im gonna try to do all that VC paint and cleaning all at once. thats why i want to wait till it gets warmer out.

there shouldnt be a problem driving around like this for a little while longer right?
