    91 318is

    Hey guys,

I got myself a somewhat clean 318is and im excited to clean it up a little bit more and getting it more suitable for daily driving.

I was wondering, with 149k on the car (odometer still works some how)
what should i look for, or replace, or change, or do before i change what it obviously needs

I guess my question is what should i look twice at, and what do i need to keep an eye out for

The front wheel bearings have been replaced recently, as well as the front tie rods.

the idle is a little rough, so im going to go ahead and clean the ICV. I would like to find a stock airbox for the car, because there is a pretty ghetto CAI on it.

    pics to follow! im stoked!

Check and see if any vacuum hoses are cracked. See if the Control arm bushings have been replaced as well. That's the stuff I had to replace on mine.

Yeh check vacume hoses, and if they are cracked it would be worth doing the water and vacume hose delete mod. Very basic and will save you a lot of time and trubble. Other thing would just be the usual like thermostate and bushes.

One expensive repair is the Timing Chain you will hear a rattling when it is on its way out in the mean time you can replace the Timing Chain Tensioner to keep things Tight! This is something that comes around on high millage cars as the timing chain is not suposed to be replaced ever, but just like everything they wear out.

Pull the oil pan there may be a bolt or two in it or some loose bolts on the oil pick you might want to put them back in or tighten them up.

If you are still not happy with the idle then you should maybe looking at chaining the Cam and Flywheel position sensors and the O2 sensor. That should help. Oh and check to make shore that the rubber boot between the Air Flow Meter and Throttle Body dose not have any air leaks.

I replaced my oil pan gasket and cleaned it up too. It was very simple took about 15 minutes to do and was really cheap. Check your rear control arm bushings and see if there is a lot of wear. If so replace it with urethane bushings makes it feel a lot better and smoother. Invest in some sea foam. Disconnect the vacuum line on the brake booster and while the engine is running pour it into that vacuum hose. As soon as it runs out turn the car off and let it sit for 5 min. Turn it back on (might be hard to start) then run the piss out of it till the smoke goes away. $9 bucks and should help your idle a little at least. Good luck with the car sounds fun
