Death of an M42, Last night... :(

While I have no videos to prove it, I have had better days. After a full top end rebuild my engine let go last night. Heading down the freeway everything was kosher. It began to lose power and I tried to pull it over (in traffic). Luckily there was an offramp right in front of me. I barely got off the freeway and POOF. Engine died and copious amounts of dark black smoke bellowed out. I pushed it to the side of the street and popped the hood. Well, no leaks at all, but no coolant either. Overheated, hardcore. To give you an idea of how hot it was, I spit on the valve cover and it boiled. No lights came on, the temp gauge was perfect, no steam, WTF???

Well I guess those aspirations of an M30 Swap are going to come faster than I thought.... Well assuming I can find a bag of money sometime soon.

Did you not have a working temp gauge? How did it overheat or lose coolant so fast that you couldn't pull over or turn it off in time?

The valve cover gets hella hot when it's running normally. Are you sure it overheated?

It was running perfectly and then just died?

Yes the gauge was working fine. I couldnt tell you what happened. Once I start breaking it down, I'll let you know.

          Ken,
Yeah it was running almost perfectly, (still had the idle issue at start) and then it died.

If it was black or dark smoke unless you heard mechanical noise I would look into a fuel issue before breaking down the engine.

If overheating it should be white(steam) or blue(if oil involved), any water in oil or oil in water?

Do you mean to say the car had no coolant, or no coolant leaks?

that sucks man. no leaks but no coolant... did you just forget to fill it afterwards?

honestly, read up on the 24v swap thread... if you decide to do a swap next, that'll be far easier than an m30 since you're starting with an m42 car.

The no coolant/black smoke combo is what is throwing me.

Engine got soo hot it burnt and glossed the rings pistons and cylinders(loss of power) then oil rapily was burnt to a crisp(dark smoke) as for No coolant their was a leak, then the 250+ temp evaporated the leak in to a light mist....

Okokok maby I went a lil to far but it is an idea

                              To OP best of luck!
