so where did it come from and how did it end up loose from the car ?
it looks like the bypass valve for the water heater system. for a short while they had that valve , that when it noticed ( by pressure) say a leak in the heater core, it would shut the valve and not allow water to go to it. it should not be affecting your idle , if that is the valve
bmw only used it for a short time, I have 2 - 91's 318's one has it , one does not, . the one that does have it , will soon loose it , as I just got new hoses . to me , its just another thing to go wrong
the plastic "t" went to the top hose, at the firewall, the valve went to the bottom
when you order replacement hoses, realoem, pelican , etc, make no reference to itI owuld look for another source of vacum leak or the icv valve acting up
your sig says 325, but you posted this under m42's so if a m42 and
if you still have the snake nest under the manifold and throttle body heater, , bingo
you can find references to servicing the icv valve and getting rid of the mess under the manifold
i drive a 325 right now as seen in my sig, but i have a 318is for my next project ;) i refuse to show pictures of the car until im actually driving it.
