    Stumped

    this is my first post after being a member for years, i tend to read, learn and figure things out on my own and thus far my 318i has been a bulletproof car. Until last night, while driving back home the car lost all of the low end power and would not rev past 4k. The car was operating in normal temperature, no coolant loss, no smoke of any kind.

    225k on the motor timing chain need to be replace (was actually trying to source a m42 to swap and rebuild current engine)

    I do have an intermittent check engine light that comes on at idle but disappears after reaching 1500 rpm.

    I am stumped, could a clogged cat cause this?

    If I lost the head gasket the temp would have shot up, and steam would have been evident. If i threw a ring would have had smoke. loss of main bearing engine would have seized, if the chain slipped there should have been unusual noise.

    Every thing seems normal except the car is super quiet now, almost like its not even running.

    guidance greatly appreciated, thanks

    i am getting error code 1223 which indicated coolant temp sensor, would this be the cause?

    1 coolant sensor operates gauge, 1 coolant sensor tells ecu what temp motor is to adjust fuel etc after its warmed up.

    i would check your crank/cam sensors and Throttle sensor. Seems to be likely culprits on car when r3v's are limited.

    let us know.
