Out M40, in M42 (E30 318i)

I have a 1990 318i, it has the well known tappet noise from the engine. I have been advised from an 'E30 Restoration Bible' to replace the whole engine (which i am capable of doing). Id like an engine with DOHC, like the M42 or even S14, but i can only find E36 M42s available in Australia. Can anyone please tell me or send me links so i know what i need to modify and etc when putting a E36 M42 into an E30. thanks.

i am planning on tuning the engine to 'fast road' to drive at the track occasionally. the car is already lowered and has a stainless steel exhaust system fitted. I will need to scrap this exhaust?
