rebuild m42 or replace with m44

my m42 took a dump on me recently. its got a nasty rattle noise coming from within the engine. i took the valve cover and cams out to check the springs and they look ok so im guessing it might be something in the block.. maybe bent rod or spung bearing? im in the process of pulling the engine. and i have a 96 318ti parts car (its for my sisters car) with an m44... my question is whether i should swap the engine out and replace it with the m44 or should i just rebuild the m42 and put it back in? no matter which engine i use, im rebuilding the m42. this will be my first engine rebuild and ive been looking forward to rebuilding it. i have 2 e30s so it will end up in one of them. i havent heard very good things about the m44 and ive also heard i would have to replace all the electronics in order to use the m44. honestly id rather stick with the m42 but like i said before this will be my first engine rebuild so id appreciate opinions on whats the best thing to do. thanks
