    AC compressor e30 vs e36

My compressor is busted.. the pulley has a ton of play in it and started smoking when I put the belt on it. (Bought the car with no belt on it)

I figured that I might as well do the R134a conversion while I'm at it.

Has anyone had any luck using the compressor from the e36 m42? I think the pulley is different. If I can just change the pulley, it might be an easy swap. It should also be R134a because it was made after 1991 (right?)

Has anyone had luck with rebuilding the compressor? After I finish the suspension on this car Im going to have any refrigerant recovered and take the compressor apart. After some research I found that you have to replace the seals, and change the oil. I will probably install new bearings while Im at it.

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated

The bearings in your pulley are toast so you cant reuse it

E30 uses V Belt driven AC compressor, E36 uses serpentine drive AC compressos -
so the answe to your Q is no.

          but

pre 1993 E36 may also have V Belt driven AC compressor which can work with your E30.

So here you have it, hope that helps.

The clutch/pulleys can be interchangeable depending on the compressor, I changed my E30 M20 compressor over to a serpentine setup.

The first 2 years of the e36 318i's had some hybrid setup on the belts. But you need the crank pulley as well.

Search up the 318is DASC kit conversion GRM did.

                So this post basically says:

Car A part is one way, Car B part is another.

Car B part won't work in Car A.

                Except for when it will.

ok the very late m42's used a smaller compressor, I dont think you will have luck with that one. but, the early e36's used one that appears to be exactly the same as the e30 one except with a different pulley.

Both your clutch and compressor are most likely bad. The bearings are seized up and the shaft on the compressor is fuked because of the non moving bearings
