oil light? not a reset question

i was just curious how the oil light measured oil change time. i assumed it was from milage on the OD but my OD broke a while ago and oil light is still ticking down. sorry if this is a "newb" question, but i'm curious. searched around for a while and didn't find my answer.

also, this is probably the wrong forum to post this in but i wasn't sure if it was different between year and make. i have a 91 318is so i posted here.

The info comes from the DME...and just because the odometer doesn't move does not mean it is "broken", only the gear is. The brains still work, you just can't tell from where you sit.

Look at page 6210-1 on the ETM. Vehicle speed, engine temp, RPM, all feed into the SI board.
