    bought a 91 318i, have an issue.

I bought a 91 318i, car needed a fuel pump which was included brand new in the trunk, I popped it in, cranked her 4-5 times for 6 seconds and fired up. took her for a drive and aside from a hideously loud exhaust, drove well.

the problem came later in the day, I started it up, runs great and idles good, but when I started to back up (car is a Manual) revved it up to 1500 just fine but when I started to let out the clutch, the car hesitated, I have to put the clutch back in to keep the engine from dieing. this happened several times and in forward gears too.

if I push the gas hard, it'll sputter like mad then give me a little burst of power then stutter. it will still idle just fine but under any kind of throttle load she doesnt run well.

any thoughts? I think it threw a CEL so maybe I should stomp test it.

TPS? Vacuum leak? dirty ass fuel filter? any input is appreciated.

Since you just got it, you should probably go ahead and simplify the vacuum hose mess under the intake and delete that tb heater. Solved my idle issue. Clean the iacv also.

Go on google and search for "mess under the intake" and you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. Easy enough job.
I'd explain a bit more but I'm on my phone :(.

try using some fuel cleaner and see if that helps. maybe its something to do with your fuel system.

i would also check the plugs, plug wires, coils, etc. and of course check for vacuum leaks.

how many miles on the engine?

ill dump in some fuel system cleaner as well as some fuel soon, the wire, I'll have to look and disconnect it if its connected, as far as the mess under the intake, I'll see what I can do this weekend.

change the fuel filter, fix/check the mess under the intake, clean the iac and check a thread on m42 club about a wire up on the fire wall.

That's great! Thanks for posting a follow-up/conclusion. Should also run some cleaner/change fuel filter now!
