    Vertically Mount an M42

I'm trying to put an M42 in my MG, however, I'm running into some clearance issues. Most of my issues will be resolved if I mount the engine vertically instead of diagonally (valve cover level, not intake level). Obviously this makes the oil pan not work, but I can make a new one, along with a new pickup.

Is there anything else I'm not thinking of that would be an issue?

Yeah oil drainback could be a problem. Also the front coolant pipes will be off by a bit, which isn't that big a deal but may cause bleeding issues.

I thought about the oil drain back, but as long as it is level, I think it should be fine. I haven't pulled the valve cover yet to look. Are the drain galleries on the lower side of the head only?

I love your MG. My grandpa has owned about 3 MGB's in my life time and they are fun. I think it would be so cool if you could get this to work.

Even something as simple as measuring your oil with the dipstick becomes a bit of a guessing game too. If you're using the M42's tranny, you'll have to keep the tranny level, which means making new tabs to bolt her up.

Dipstick would be modified to work with the new oil pan to read correctly, so that isn't a problem. Tranny could be an issue, but at this point, I'm not sure if it will be rotated enough to matter. I still have a lot of stuff to look at and figure out though.

Have you thought about swapping a different motor? Seems like a lot of work when there are probably other options.

                      Transmission angle?

You can make a flat bottomed pan and dry sump the engine. You then can lower the motor another inch or two.

Tranny angle would need to be corrected with either some type of adapter or a whole new bell housing..

^^^I think an M20 bellhousing fits the M42 block. To be confirmed. If so, then get one from an early 528e with two-piece tranny. You can cut the end of that bellhousing where it bolts to the tranny (four bolts), and fabricate a new one, that will be rewelded at the proper angle.

Rotate the motor, but raise one side of the car up with super long springs.
