    WOT Problem with M42

    Car: 91 318i

Problem: The car idles great, very smooth. Engine runs well with no real issues and seems to operate under normal conditions just fine. However, whenever I floor the car (WOT) the rpm's just hold and the car does not accelerate. For instance, driving along at 3000rpm, put foot to the floor, car will just stay at 3000 rpm. It doesn't really stutter, maybe a slight bucking, but nothing really major. If I ease on the gas, the car revs freely and seems to be just fine.

What the hell is going on with this thing?

    Throttle Position Sensor?
    Mass Air Flow?
    ????

    Thanks

check your throttle position switch. There is a chance that it isn't reading correctly at WOT, and then isn't adding fuel when it needs to. I'm assuming the MAF is fine if it works under other driving conditions, because it doesn't determine when the car is at WOT.

There are two throttle position parts. A throttle position sensor and a throttle position switch. In this case would one or both be bad? Is there an easy way to diagnose if it is the switch or the sensor? Thanks.

if you've got a multimeter, you can test them both relatively easily.
