kinda bumping this for myself. But I got the m20 this past weekend. Guys think I should put a new high performance cam in it? That's a little bit of money right there, but it'll be a nice mod. Or should I do something else. I figured, while I have the engine apart, I might as well do some stuff like that. I have all new belts, etc. that im putting in. Anything else I should do to the engine while it's out?

Well... still not sure if it's going in. Havent done any breakdown yet. Might take the m42 out and try to get away with a little bit of a rebuild... It's been hard to work on it considering the snow on the ground and my small as hell garage.

Personally I would have done a rebuild on the m42. I have had an m20b27 an m20b25 and now I have my m42 and I can honestly say that this has been my favorite car and motor to own/daily drive.

Stick with the m42, if everything is toast, find some s50 pistons, bore the block to 86mm. Grab an m44 crank, deck the pistons and achieve 11:1 CR. 1.9 liters and m20 power :)

Alright, since i'm going with rebuilding my m42, here is the verdict. Engine turns over by hand but makes a loud squeak going to the top of the compression stroke. Is this bearings or what? How in depth of a rebuild should i start looking into?
