    Rev counter question

I just bought a 90 318is with the m42 in it. The PO said that the car was chipped with a Dinan chip and had mustang injectors. Now don't get me wrong the car runs very well but it only revs to about 4200rpm or so. I thought that the chip was suppose to bring that up a bit. Also my gas gauge is way off. Is there any possibility I have an incompatible gauge cluster in the car or should I pull the ECU to check the chip?

Redline with OEM chip is 6500 or so, Dinan raises it to 7000. I've never heard of any chip that would limit you to 4200. Does the motor sound like its reving that high?

It sounds fine. I'm thinking it may have something to do with this gauge.

check to see if you have a 318is chip thing on your cluster, i sold a 325i cluster and tested it on my 318is and it would only rev to 3500 rpm

Hmm, like the code plug? This could be it. Do you know what numbers should be on it?
