    oil pan/sump To weld or not to weld .... that is the question!

    there are the pics, what do you guys think should i just replace the whole thing or can i just have someone at a shop weld it for me. Also, how much do you think the weld would cost, and do i have to search around for a specialty place that welds or do auto shops usually have welding machines..... again any opinion would be great

    cast aluminum is difficult to weld but not impossible. May be cheaper to replace it.

      besides a gasket would i need anything else to replace the oil pan? (and the oil pan of course)

          yeah ive tried getting it welded at a shop, the ones i stopped by all said its very difficult. buying a new one wouldnt be much more.

            Grind it out a bit, make sure it is very clean and then JB weld inside and out. The one on my M20 was done that way and has remained dry for 2 years.

            If it does leak, then spring for a new pan. Gasket is cheap and its easy enough to replace. While you are in there, if you haven't done it already, make sure all of the upper pan bolts are tight. Especially the ones by the pickup.

                Welding it won't be a problem. Its a 2-3 pass job. Use a grinder and a torch first, then 1-2 no filler passes with grinding in between, and then a light filler pass to finalize it. I'd do it inside and out, but inside only would be plenty. And of course, TIG.

                I'd look on CL for a TIG man. I can find pros for $40-50/hr all day long, and a dude on CL won't mind doing something small that is a PITA and charge massively less than most shops/fab shops.

                Now, if you can get a new pan for <$40, do that instead... Easy!

                And yes, all you need is a new pan/fixed pan, gasket, and 12mm crush washer.

                  That crack would not be difficult to weld, if you feel like shipping it to philly I can tig it up and send it back.
