I would register on m42club.com if you own an m42 car.
Personally, I would not use the Permatex gasket maker..

It's super-staight forward..
Drain some coolant
Disconnect the obvious
Replace the obvious
Fill/bleed coolant system
For questions like this - another (obvious) suggestion is to dig up an e36 (e30 Bentleys don't cover m42s) Bentley manual in a pdf format online.Comment

ok dude here it is you need a wrench a 10mm socket a 32 mm wrench or 1 1/4 wrench a flat screwdriver some beer, start by removing the fan clutch (reverse thread) after that is removed remove it along with the shroud. now that you have a shitload of space remove the cps sensor the remove the four screws that hold in the housing, remove housing and let a bunch of coolant pour everywhere. Then remove old thermo replace with new one install gasket and use rtv etc sealant if you wish, put back housing and screws take a break drink beer, then tighten all that shit up along with cps screw then put back on fan and shroud. then spend countless hrs trying to bleed the bloody basterdStrategic nw e30 commandOriginally posted by bmwm42PNW vulture pm me for partsComment

This view may/may not come in handy for you (I personally forgot whether the o-ring went in before or after the t-stat). As previously suggested, don't use RTV!! Get the mating surfaces clean, ditch the paper housing gasket, and use a thin layer of Right Stuff.

I've replaced an m42 thermostat w/out removing the fan fwiw.
Like it's a squeeze - but doable.. good idea to get the shroud out of the way..Comment
