my 318is is overheating

today the temp gague reached red and back and forh to 1/2 mark and 3/4 eventually back to 1/2. i see i have an oil leak on my oil filter housing, theres coolant still in the car and i had replaced the thermostat and hoses couple months back.
im not sure where to go from here is the thermostat stuck?

Did the temp gauge move slowly between those temps or was it bouncing around erratically? It could just be a loose ground nut on the backside of the gauge.
