    Making Progress!!

I know this is somewhat routine stuff for many of you guys but today, I finally pulled out the old beat up m42 from my 318is.

I am pretty pleased with this because my resources are fairly limited. I'm working with a basic craftsman mechanics tool set, 2 jack stands, a bottle neck jack that came in my truck, an engine hoist (Thank God for this engine hoist!). I am being super cheap, thats why I haven't gotten a floor jack even though it would save so much time. I don't have a garage or anywhere to keep a bunch of tools right now so I have been holding off on large purchases.

This was my first time pulling a motor by myself. The only other motor I have pulled was the 302 out of my 61 Ford F100. But I had help and a bare frame when I did that one. I am hoping to get my brother-in-law over here when the newer m42 goes back in.

But anyway, I know every one loves pics. Some are a little blurry because I was getting pretty shaky by the end of the day (needed some food).

This is what the guys at school call me because we almost used one of my G240's in the quarter scale tractor we are building for this years competition.

How it will sit until I can get the other m42 ready to go back in. Hoping it wont be too much harder going in than it was coming out. Sitting a little high in the front.

P.S. If anyone wants parts off of this motor let me know. Also the working g240 is for sale if anyone is interested. The car is still for sale, but once installing the new m42 gets underway the price will either go up or I'll just decide to keep it.

So I sold the motor and trans that I pulled out of the car to a local enthusiast. He was a very nice guy who made a fair deal with me on the stuff.

Today I got the good motor put in the car. Nothing is hooked up yet but it is in there.

One issue I had is that the A/C compressor that came off my old block wont mount up to my new block. The holes are no where near aligning. It is an e30 m42 though.

The other issue I had was that sometime along the way the wire going through the shifter (I am assuming reverse lights) got ripped. So I had to repair that but my soldering iron was acting up so I just ended up using butt connectors and heat shrinking it.

The other issue I had was the motor mounts and the trans mounts. While trying to get the motor settled into place the passenger side motor mount got destroyed. I was justing a bottle neck jack and a jack stand to try and maneuver the trans into place and forgot about the jack stand when I finally lower the motor all the way. This stretched the trans mounts to the point where one of them broke.

But at least its in the car. Here are a few pictures from the day. Nothing real exciting

Reverse light wire fix. I didn't know how long it needed to be so I gave myself some slack. Looks scrubish

Getting the motor off the porch

Trying to get it in the truck on the side of a hill. My brother in law came to be the jack man.

    Getting it in there

And this is what the guy who is not the jack man ends up looking like.

I forgot to take any pics of it in there car but you know what it looks like. Hopefully I can get her running by the end of January so I don't have to trailer it when I move.

This ALWAYS happens to me. Just get so caught up in trying to get big projects complete that I lose track. Why the engine swap?

There was an unknown issue with the old motor when I bought the car. I got a motor/trans from a running car with 145k on it for $300. So I figured this would be better than repairing a 200k+ motor that I know nothing about.
