    e30 m42 engine help please clip youtube

    hey guys
    i am a new member and new to it all i have a problem which i need some help with its a rattling sound while revving it gets pretty loud any help would be great

    Well that is an interesting sound. I think sounds like your timing chain is loose. I would recommend removing your chain tensioner and replacing see what that dose.

    FYI a new chain tensioner needs time to pressurize so it may make noise still for a few seconds to a few minutes after you start your car up after install.

    Have you done any work to the engine lately?

      Yeah, Massimo is right replace your Chain tensioner that would the best thing to start with.

      Massimo quick question I recently purchased a M44 tensioner but when I went to test fit make sure that it was all good before I oiled it a bit. but when I took it off thing just popped off and disassembled itself. any idea if this can be put together or should I buy a new one?

        Yeh that happened to me as well. It can be put back together but it is mighty pain in the ass I ended up using a vise to hold it while I moved it around to lock it back in. So yes it can but it is up to you if you want to spend the time or just buy another one.

          Ok thanks umm the sound is most present at 1500 rpm it sounds like its coming from the front of the engine nah nothing apart from a k&n filter and performance chip ???

              Yeh I would guess it is the chain then. I would swap in a new tensioner if that dose not do it then I might be time to replace timing parts.

              Also I would not be starting or running the car till you have the new tensioner in, the chain could skip a tooth then the valves could hit the pistons and it will be all over.

              It would get quieter as your revs go up as the clunking will become more fluid and seem like it is going away.

                +1 on using a vice to put your tensioner back together. I dropped mine the other day and it exploded. Put it in a C-clamp, then use pliers or some other kind of tool to push that S.O.B. little ring back in. I used lock-ring pliers.

                    Even with the most worn out tensioner ever, it's not going to skip a tooth. You're really just beating up your timing guides and gears with a loose chain.

                        True with the upper timing guide it shouldn't but crazier things have happened.

                          The timing chain isn't slack in anyway would that still make the chain tentioner the problem still or rule it out ???

                            Yes the tensioner has a spring in it so it will always keep the chain tight when the engine is not on. But once running the tensioner relies on oil pressure to keep the chain tight, once it gets clogged with crap the oil pressure in it drops which is why they fail. The spring alone is not strong enough to handle the centrifical force of the chain.

                              hey guys
                              i put in the new timing chain tensioner m42 in after catching my mate unclick it i am not sure if it would have stuffed it or not but the sounds still there at just under 1500rpm i also had a sqizz at the timing chain and its not loose in anyway if that make's a diff ? :hitler:
