to the original question. I assume that you had the heater on when filling the cooling system, but one odd thought.
some of the cars were equipped with a heater bypass safety valve. this ws put into some models of th em42's cooling system and the design thoguth was that if the heater core developed a leak, then water would not be sent to the heater core.
My 318ic does not have this, my 318is did have this. to me it was just another thing to go wrong so I eliminated it.. I have never really looked at how or why it functions.
maybe tha tis on your car and maybe it is stuck in the closed position not allowing water to go there, again , really dont know how this stupid thing was supposed to work.
I have read thereads from people saying got to have it or youll blw the heater core out with high pressure but IM willing to bet that it was not that the M42 was pushing so much pressure to blow the cores, but a batch of faulty cores form the supplier when they were building the car, causing problems , thus creating this stupid little valve/recall.
and have you looked next to your gas pedal, is the standard heater control valve working?
if your not getting the heater core system full at bleeding, you will have problems
also I have seen airblocks at sensors making them not accurate
ive also seen wires cut or broken or grounding
last thing...i haver one of those digital laser temp guns. I alsway shoot around on engines etc. I had one car that the temp gauge said it was way hot. the thermos gun proved it was not the case
