I used that and it helped out a lot. It says that the chain should be 15 rivets from arrow to arrow on the cam gears though and I wasn't so sure about that. Mine was 16 before I pulled off the chain and I read 16 other places. Not sure if it's such a big deal though..

You need the cam shaft tool, not a pencil.

yep a pencil wont do any good.
I have the cam locking tool kit that I bought years ago the first time I had to do a head and chain on an m42

I do wonder why he says to pull the waterpump when the job can be done without it, however if a person had a waterpump of questionalble working conditiono or age, then this would be a good time to pull it

glad I cought this chain when I did, I expected far worse with the noise it was making. guess it could have gone another 50 feet :)

actually I have seen some that were really tiny pieces of rails inside, cases chewed up from the chain using the case as a rail, and the person still driving

Just did this to my 318is a couple weeks ago.

Broken bottom chain rail, sprocket teeth worn sharp enough to cut flesh, intake cam timing off slightly, etc.

The next time somebody tries to crow about timing chains lasting "forever" and being better than timing belts, I'm gonna punch 'em in the nuts.

I used a block of wood to line up the camshafts...

It's not perfect but my m42 runs smooth
