M20 flywheel issue

Facts:

M20 flywheel, M20 starter, new stainless clutch line, new slave and master.

Clutch has been bled. The car won't go into gear when the clutch is engaged. The car can be started and when you do so, the car moves forward a bit when the clutch pedal is fully engaged. Once the clutch is let out, the car will move but can't be taken out of gear unless it's forcefully pulled out.

Fact I do not know: The previous owner of this transmission SAID it had a proper 323i throw out bearing. I don't recall checking it when I put it into the car. Could this be the problem? It seems possible if the slave isn't moving the clutch far enough to engage and disengage properly.

So this is on an M42? Did you take the thin plate off the M42 flywheel and put it between the M20 flywheel and the crank? This moves the whole flywheel/clutch assembly towards the pivot arm.

Yes, M42. I don't recall on the thin plate. This car has been an ongoing project since last May. I think the clutch/flywheel went back on around November. Just can't remember...

Well I'd try bleeding it again and if that doesn't work I'd pull the trans back off and check for the correct TOB (the 323i one) and that the plate is there.

I appreciate the advice. I'm going to try bleeding it with the slave removed then go the route you suggest. I'll be PISSED if I was lied to about that TOB.

JB racing if you've got the scratch and are looking for a race car, otherwise single mass M20 or single mass M42. I went with a lightened M20 flywheel because I wanted the extra holding power for the turbo and track use, and performance M42 clutches typically aren't very forgiving.
