How does one test for spark and their coils?

91 318i, ran great yesterday, shut it down, started it up 15 minutes later, started running horrible. Major engine missing and horrible engine shaking. Cam and crank sensors test good. Spark plugs look good visually, no major vacuum leaks I can find.

Not sure what it is yet, been trying to diagnosis it all day today.

What is the proper way to test for spark, and to test the coil packs? I tried searching but couldn't find what method is typically used.

Can I do it with the valve cover off by chance?

Disconnect the spark plug wires one by one with the engine running. If the engine is already running bad and it gets worse or dies when one is pulled then the plug/wire is good. If there is no change and it is running bad then the plug may be bad.

    No.
