    m42 coil connections

I am sorry if this is a repost, but i recently picked up a COP kit for my e30 which did not come with instructions so i guessed how it all goes together. When i took out the old coil pack/leads i placed a colour code on each of the dme connectors to tell me which socket went into each coil. when i had it all reinstalled and hooked up engine would turn over then splutter and die. i figured i had installed it incorrectly so pulled it all apart and tried again to no avail so i put back in the standard pack/leads so i could drive the car again. Now for some reason car still does not run, so i am assuming i had labelled the connectors the wrong and now i'm lost.

Is anyone able to tell me which of the black connectors is which, because they are all the same except for being grouped in pairs.

All the brown/oranges are tied to ground
All the greens go to pin 56 on the ECM
    The black for:
Coil 1 goes to pin 25 on the ECM
Coil 2 goes to pin 52 on the ECM
Coil 3 goes to pin 24 on the ECM
Coil 4 goes to pin 51 on the ECM

sorry i am not the most mechanically inclined, so do i have to remove the plastic sheath and follow each of these plugs all the way back to the ecm to determine which is which?

Is there an easier way i just need to know which orientation the plugs go into the coil pack receivers, does anyone have any good pictures that can represent this?

If you're asking which lead plugs into which coil now that you have them mixed up the answer is all that you can do (without tracing leads) is use the trial and error method of switching around leads until the engine runs properly. Of course there is a shorter pair which fo to the lower coils and a longer pair which go to the upper coils so that will cut down on the number of possibilities. Lessen learned - mark things before you remove them if there's any chance of getting them mixed up.

thought that was the case, i did mark them with coloured zip ties which i thought was correct (could have had lapse in concentration and tagged the wrong ones) thought i had it correct but it did not seem to run how it should, possibly there is something else in play here. Thanks for the replies, friend is coming over today so hopefully we can work it out between us.

          Cheers.
