    Yes, another tensioner thread

First time changing it out on a m42 and I happened to find this video, just wondering if the video is accurate or are there any other procedures. i.e lube the tensioner, re-time the motor

    Looks pretty straight forward.

    Thanks R3V.

Nope. That's the deal. If it comes apart on you it's easy to reassemble. Just stick it in a vice or cabinet drawer and squish it back together.

Do you have to replace anything else aside from the tensioner? What about the bolt?

According to this source, you shouldn't expand the tensioner.

            ^^No.

^If your timing set is significantly worn and you don't pre-expand the tensioner you run the risk of jumping time.

My gears look pretty good based on the others that i've seen while doing research.

What do you suggest, which way should i install the tensioner?

                Good looking timing set.

I've replaced them on three separate occasions in three different cars, and each time I pre expanded them because I hate the idea of revving an engine with a sloppy chain.

Based on my positive experiences and feedback from others I suspect people that have had problems after doing this had other guide or idler issues.

So got this job done on my m42 and just wanted to give some people some heads up when decompressing the tensioner.
Make sure that the release process is as slow as possible, otherwise the spring force will push the innner capsule out(as seen in tensioner on top of picture)
Luckily had a spare to use. The bottom image is how its properly decompressed.

However, the change of the tensioner did not make my engine quieter.
                  Here's a before clip:

                  Here's the after clip:

Can anyone tell me what this might be? I know the m42 has hydraulic valve adjustment--so it can't be that it needs a valve adjustment.

Do the hydraulic lifters get dirty on M42s? I know Mazda BPs are notorious for having noisy hydraulic lifters.
