    transmission replacement?

    I am wondering what all goes into this job, and what other parts I would need. Here are the parts I have: trans, shift rod & carrier, clutch, flywheel, flex disc and CSB. Are there any parts I am missing for the job? I am still learning and would love some tips/pointers about what to expect. Also, are there any specific tools I will need?

    Bolts for the FW & PP; transmission mounts (if you have not looked at them already); an exhaust gasket (manifold to pipe); if you have the puller, the rear main seal and gasket; transmission seals (output and selector shaft), and maybe some ATF (or whatever the sticker on the trans specs). If you need to do any work on the intake manifold this would be a great time to do it since you need to take that off. Be prepared to get a new reverse light switch if you are doing the job from underneath with the car on jackstands.

    All that assumes you got a clutch kit which should have an alignment tool, throw out bearing and pilot bearing.

    Hope I'm not neglecting anything, I am sure other will chime in.

      Do this. Trannys seal, etc. pretty much any gasket/seal you can get towhile youre there needs to be done. Dont be the guy that cheaps out on an 8 dollar seal and 4 minutes so that it can start leaking three weeks after you replace the trans.

        Head down to autozone and rent a bearing puller with slide hammer and a seal puller. Life will be much easier if you do.

          ^ omg yes.

          I treid for 3 days to pull the pilot bearing on my old m20 (6 hours+ invested) and then I finally rented a puller and a slide hammer and it took 30 seconds

            Thanks everyone, I appreciate the help! I told one of my friends about the seals and mounts and he said I don't need to replace them hahahaha Coming from a guy who changed his water pump, didn't replace one of the seals and immediately started leaking coolant (which is why he replaced it ha)

              do all the seals, theres a good writeup on Pelican I think. Get that non-curing sealer too, hylomar for the seals, they sell it at advance auto, its a replacement for that Curil-T stuff mentioned in the pelican article.

                  I can't seem to find the other transmission seals (output and selector shaft) as well as the exhaust gasket (manifold to pipe). Any help is appreciated.

                    Find the part numbers here: http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E3...is-M42/browse/

                    Copy the appropriate part number in the search block of your favorite aftermarket seller (Pelican, ECSTuning, Turner, BavAuto, etc) for price and availability. Note that for some sites, like ECSTuning, you have to remove the dashes and spaces from the part number.

                      I totally forgot about that site, thank you for reminding me. Didn't find the output seal, selector shaft seal or rear main seal on there. If anyone has bought these before I would love to know the part numbers.
