    Let's talk about code 4E

    Hey guys,

My car has been idling like a bag of doo doo and hard to start when warmed up. I'm pulling code 4E which is coolant temp. sensor. I just replaced the sensor and flashed the code out. It came right back and low and behold, car still running like doo-doo.

My first guess is that there could be an issue with the continuity in the wiring. Outside of that, I got nothin'. I have no access to a multimeter until tomorrow. Could something else be causing this code to trigger?

The blue sensor (the one closest to the front of the engine) is the sensor for the ECM. Is that the one you changed?

What reader were you using to pull that code? Perhaps the stomp test code would disagree with the reader?

The BavAuto reader. What is this "stomp test" you speak of? Or are you talking about matting the throttle?

The stomp test is simple, with the car off, turn the key to on, but don't start it, quickly press the throttle pedal to the floor 5 times. If that does not work you can key it up and actuate the throttle body by hand in the engine bay. Then the CEL with give a ~2/3 second solid blink and then give out the codes one digit at a time with a short pause in between each digit and a slightly longer pause between codes. When it has given all of the codes it will do the 2/3 second solid CEL. Then just look up the code.

Or just search stomp test and find more clarity if that wasn't enough.

That makes sense. I will try that when I get home; thanks!!
