I've been slowly getting my e30 318is back to health. The ONLY thing is in the higher RPM range, the engine will misfire or cutout around 5000 RPM. It's just a stutter, like it will miss a few fires then keep on running fine all the way to redline. I can't pinpoint it down to a specific throttle position or any sort of condition like that, but it's when I'm romping on it like 75% throttle or more. If I slowly accelerate into the higher RPMs, it runs smooth.
I'm running out of ideas. Fluctuating fuel pressure? Coil starting to go bad? Other than that, the engine runs smooth as butter.
Just a FYI it has 265k miles on it, in the past 10k miles I've done plugs, wires, timing chain tensioner, ICV, alternator, misc gaskets, oil pan, and just routine maintenance and oil changes.
