    Is this a big deal?

I looked at (potential purchase) an 88 325i w/ 130k that had some ticking/tapping noise coming the top end area after start up and idle. After about a 10 min test drive the noise was gone, eng sounded fine. lifters? exhaust leak? a rod noise wouldn't go away would it? the car apparently is no longer a daily driver (maybe driven once a wk). How concerned should I be? Overall, you can tell the 1 owner car has been well taken care of. Before I purchase it, i'm having the noise diagnosed by a tech. Any thoughts?

You might get better answers if you posted in the m20 section instead of the 4cyl m42 subforum.

Ask when the last time they did a valve adjustment.

Many m20s sound like sewing machines even if everything is ok and things are in adjustment. There are a few that are quiet but that is rare. Just make sure your prospect is in adjustment and not about to grenade itself, and then drive it on down the road.
