    Agreed, I could totally see a mechanic that doesn't know every little nuance about these cars to just plug it in or even a newb like my brother. Report back if this works for you.

      I know it wasn't my mechanic who connected it because I brought it
      to him for the problem - it was probably me when I was looking to figure
      out why my heater blower sometimes stops working - I had the cover
      off of the wire harness and probably saw a disconnected wire and put
      it back together. It's possible the previous owner did it, but IIRC, the
      problem didn't always exist.

      So the mechanic would have to know "When a car stumbles after partial cool
      down, someone possibly reconnected the gray/black wire which looks like it
      belongs plugged in".

      In other words, they would have to know this specific situation.
      A mechanic that worked at a BMW dealership in the early 1990's
      might have seen it - but if they changed it on the E36 M42, it
      would have to be someone who knows the 1991 318i & 318is
      really well.

        I can definitely confirm it now -
        disconnecting the Gray/Black wire with the single connector cured the problem. :up:
