    M42 Good for Road Trip?

    Hey r3v.
I recently acquired some DTM tickets for the race up at the GP Track at the Nurburgring. The Nordschleife will still be open and I have been here for over a year and a half now and have not made the trip up yet. I want to drive up there the day before and run the Green Hell (not hard mind you just for the enjoyment) and take part in the festivities the next day.
    My concerns:
My M42 has some chain rattle at the usual rev range of 2700 to 3500ish. But other than that the engine pulls like an ox, and other than my drain plug leaking oil there is little no oil consumption happening. The rest of the car is in tip top "mechanical" shape. The body is another story From anyones past experiences should I be good to make the 2 hour, 120 mile voyage up there, and then back? I do enjoy all comments positive and the not so positive it just reminds me that I still have much learning to do. Thanks enjoy your weekend!

I don't doubt that it will make the trip both ways without addressing the chain issue. But surely you can fix it before then? Even at dealer prices in VAT land a tensioner probably won't break the bank (if that's all you need). So, I say spend the bit of time (and money) it takes to have peace of mind so you can enjoy the trip fully.

Don't add any more beauty marks to the car on the fun toll road, it can get expensive, and do pass at least one 911 for all E30 owners.

I have already replaced the tensioner about a year ago. Funny story behind that; someone I guess put a nut between the tensioner and that cap that holds it in. I guess they thought it would compensate for the lack of spring tension? It had been neglected for some time and the cam sprockets are worn down.

And yes I know, a guy in my squadron rented a 2012 Scirocco R about 6 mins into his lap. Bam smashed straight into a a guardrail. Destroyed the car, and blew up the guard rail. It was his 1st weekend here, needless to say that 14,000 euro bill is going to eat the rest of his tour up. If the opportunity arises I will pass the 911 with a huge smile on my face!

I think all the tickets may be sold out :/ It is on 18 August. I am having the most hell of a time finding somewhere to stay the night.

Spang Billeting...or Buchel billeting Buchel being a German military base they might not have billeting since all US personell are GSU from Spang.

But there are tons of places that are Mom and Pop in the area but remember it's August so all of germany is likely to be on vacation.

Spang sounds like a good option, having to track back an hour sucks, but having a place to put fuel doesn't. Plus I have stayed in lodging there it's very cheap. Better than 100 Euro for one night. I am guessing you have been to the ring before? After I do my lap is there anything else worth seeing around there?

The muesuam without a doubt. Walk up to the castle and take some photos. Grab a bier in any of the 5-6 local pubs.

I was thinking about that, I kind of gotta make it fun for the wife too. She isn't really in to cars and the DTM race is gonna probably be boring for her. I don't see how though we will be sitting in the Gold seats on the front straight right at the start finish line and we are going to be about 6 rows up. Gonna be LOUD!!
