The idler gear snapped off in the timing case of my original engine so I just decided to swap in a low mileage m42 that I came across. I decided to swap in a new oil pan gasket while the motor was out. Low and behold there were 4 bolts in the bottom of the pan from around the oil pick up in the upper pan. I put them all back in and locktited them and tightened the rest as well. I didnt know about this issue until after I got the thing running and now the oil pressure light comes on after a few minutes of running. It sounds good on a cold start at idle, but once you rev it up or let it warm up the lifters start turning into sewing machines. I have the timing parts that I got for the old engine still. Should I just go ahead and pull the whole timing case off, replace the oil pump and throw the new guides and chain in while im at it? Is there something else I should try first?

OP - Did the idler gear snap while the car was running? It sounds like a complete replacement of the timing is in order as well as inspection of the head. Do you have oil on any of the plugs?
What oil are you running BTW?Parts Collector and Former Houndstooth interior junkie. -
Is it possible that there is air in the system not letting the oil pump work properly? Sorry if these are newb ass questionsComment

I didnt swap the bypass valve. The engine has 118k supposedly. The cam gears seem to reflect that milage as im sure they are original. Maybe I will do the bypass valve and change the upper pan gasket and see what happens before I tackle the pump. Ill keep you guys updated.Comment

The oil pump isn't a job for the weak its pretty invasive. What oil are you using....I highly doubt the oil pressure relief valve is going to fix anything. If that thing was stuck you would have low oil pressure constantly.Strategic nw e30 commandOriginally posted by bmwm42PNW vulture pm me for partsComment

Its super cold out here still so I think I stuck with 10w30. I know how shitty its gunna be doing the oil pump. But at this point I have most of the parts and not enough cash to just do a proper 6 cylinder swap of any kind. It would be really cool if the gasket is cocked for the upper pan.Comment

A gasket wont solve your issue..was the oil pick up loose....do you have lifter tick? Have you tried swapping the sensor from your old engine into this engine....there are a few quick things you can try before you start messing with the big thingsStrategic nw e30 commandOriginally posted by bmwm42PNW vulture pm me for partsComment

Lifter tick for sure. Oil light comes on after a while so I assume the sensot is good. I think it would just be on all the time if it were badComment

that's what I'm thinking. Do you happen to know if there is a write up on how to replace it and or a list of parts needed? I have the majority of everything and a few more on the way but I want to make sure that I replace every seal that I can and need to.Comment
