Car won't start after mess under intake cleanup

    Hey guys,

In attempt to get the car to pass emissions I did the "mess under the intake" cleanup following this diagram:

Upon trying to start the car it won't turn over and it makes a "pop" sound like it's locked up. The car ran before this and I'm wondering what I hooked up wrong to cause this? I did drop a throttle body nut but it wouldn't have found its way into the intake at that point. I can turn the motor over by hand. Hopefully it's something simple I over looked. Is there a check valve in one of the old hoses or something?

    Thanks for any help.

Update: It looks like it was a bad spot in the starter. Arc'd it and it was able to turn. Wants to start but just cranks. Guess I have something hooked up wrong.

Glad you got it sorted. Are you sure you have the ICV the right way round? Quick check would be to softly press the throttle pedal it as you start it.

Thank you for the reply. The ICV is installed with the arrow pointing toward the valve cover with hoses to the valve cover and the intake boot.

I used all new gaskets so I don't think there would be an intake leak but I'll tear it apart and double check.

After looking at things for an hour and trying to figure out how I could botch a simple task like this, tried cranking it again and it fired right up lol. Go figure. It must have flooded when I was trying to crank it with the dead starter spot. Anyway, runs well now! Car is getting hot though so ordered new cooling components so on to the next step!

Well, still having the same no start issues. The car will sometimes crank and then feel like it locks up. I replaced the starter and made sure the battery was fully charged and still the same issue at times. I have to turn the engine by hand, which is really difficult the first time, and then it will start. What could be happening where it is getting locked up like this? It idles and runs fine after this dead spot.

Sounds like there is potentially water getting into the cylinders creating a minor hydro-locking situation.

That would be a lovely scenario. :/

Well I think the blown headgasket diagnosis may be true. The car is overheating badly, not pushing water around properly. There was a some water in the exhaust, it is starting to run crappy as well. >.<

Same happened to one of my cars as well. Time for a headgasket job :D

Got the head off and found the following:
                      [IMG][/IMG]

While not a true crack, it was compromising the compression and pressurizing the coolant jacket (thus explaining the pressure in the system and overheating issues). It also explains the starting issues and the rough idling/running at times. Great diagnosis guys.

We have filed it out a bit and will slap it together once some more parts get here. Hopefully it holds out for at least a year. If it doesn't I'll have to evaluate whether I want to keep the car and, if so, if I want to rebuild the M42 or do a swap.

Who said it isn't a crack? When mine was cracked it was in that very same spot. (Yes the picture is crap, but you can see it.)

Yep, looks like it is a crack but doesn't go all the way through. It's at a friend's machine shop now getting welded. Hopefully it fixes the HG issues and it can be back on the road soon.

Well, got the head pressure tested and it was junk so had to buy another that was rebuilt. Put it all back together and the issues seem to be gone. Hopefully that's it and I can drive it and start working on the other issues lol.
