My 91 318is has a weird problem when starting. If I start the cold when it's cold, like in the morning, it will start no problem and everything works fine. However, if I drive it to school, then come back to start it 15 minutes to about 3 hours later, it starts up fine, but then the RPMs will start to die down and the car wants to die. Giving it throttle and trying to keep at 1k RPM for about 20 seconds will usually work and then it will idle normally, but otherwise if I don't touch the throttle it will just sputter and die. If I just start driving when it wants to die, giving it throttle almost does nothing, but then will RPMs will shoot up briefly, then down again. We had a shop do a smoke test to test for a vacuum leak, but everything was fine. Sparks plugs were changed about 2 months ago, as was a breather hose.
Also, another problem I am starting to have is grinding in 1st gear from a stop. If I am at a complete stop, I will push the clutch all the way down, and when I put it into first, it will usually grind. What I have to do to avoid it, is when slowing down to a stop, I will clutch in and start to push stick into 1st, and let it slide in once I am at a complete stop, then stay stopped at the light or whatever with the clutch in. I checked the transmission oil and it was clean, the PO had changed it about 6 months ago.
