Thats good to hear, im in the same boat. One of these weekends im just gonna do it and hopefully knock it out in a couple hours.
ahh okay maybe this one was just more defective. Im still just gonna grab better quality gaskets just in case and use grey RTV.Completely forgot about this gasket!! Definitely do it, I used all Victor Reinz gaskets with grey RTV no leaks so far :):)
Go through the write-ups and just take note of all the parts that can be replaced, also it's going to be a balancing act when taking it out since the pan has a ridge on the backend. It sucks when you have the gasket on while you're trying to put it back, definitely grab a friend for this part
I know exactly what I need, just gotta get around to doing it now is all. Ill have a friend on standby when it comes to putting it all back together.Leave a comment:

Yea ive seen a couple writeups on how to do it, just wanted to see if there were any other alternative methods before doing it. I think pretty soon here im just gonna grind it out on one of these weekends. Thanks for the advice, ill give that a try when doing it!
Awesome, thanks for the detail. I dont own an engine hoist so i was hoping there was a way to do it without. Sounds pretty straight forward the way you did it, so ill most likely go about it that way!Completely forgot about this gasket!! Definitely do it, I used all Victor Reinz gaskets with grey RTV no leaks so far :):)Didnt think of that other stuff as well, ill definitely go ahead and pickup the oilpump pickup gasket too. I got the upper pan gasket ready to go, and while im at it ill redo the lower gasket im thinking. It was last done with a POS victor reinz gasket which is seeping again already.
Im gonna have to make do with the jack stands and jack though, im sure i can make it work with what ive got.

^this...
I had do do mine as the gasket alone. I just jacked the engine up and did it. Wasn't too bad, took an hour or two maybe.. w/ cleaningLeave a comment:

I did my upper pan as a part of the head/timing case swap.
For the upper pan gasket I used copper spray on the paper gasket And then grey rtv for the lower pan gasket. No leaks for about 10k thus far.Leave a comment:

You could always support the engine on the inner fenders and drop the front subframe.
I did the E36 that way, as the subframe was... sub- par, at best. Made the gaskets,
motor mounts, etc very easy. After the hassle of getting the subframe off, of course.

I got the BMW OE upper gasket and the updated oil pressure relief valve parts ready to go in. make sure to take order the oil pump pickup gasket too and check the bolts holding that sucker in there and loctite em if needed (search on this)
engine hoist is the way to go for these sort of repairs but without it it is definitely doable with 4 jackstands and a nice wood block for the jack
I plan on using threebond to seal the lower pan gasket (have had super good luck with that stuff)

Otherwise you'd have to remove the engine. You can also do it as part of other major services such as the clutch, front subframe work, and the timing case rebuild, which makes it slightly more palatable.
Also be sure to have a good look at your engine mounts while you are there. If you can't figure out how to get the top nut off of the passenger mount you can insert a 3/8" ratchet/socket in pointing towards the wiper fluid tank (which you remove first) and use a loose fitting cheater pipe to get a good angle.
If you do need more info (although it's clear that you already looked ) this one's been covered here and on m42club.

Sounds pretty straight forward the way you did it, so ill most likely go about it that way! It's not too bad, but you defintely want a helping hand it's pretty annoying to do by yourself. I took off the nuts that hold the motor mounts onto the subframe, then jacked it up by the oil pan with a block of wood.
When jacking be careful with the throttle cable and the plastic firewall piece that holds all the wiring.
Once that's in the air put small wood chunks (all I had on hand at the time) to hold it there. All the bolts are really visible they are all 10mm I believe they also give you a chance to tighten the oil pickup in the lower pan since you have to remove all of that. You have to get torx sockets for the 4 bolts that hold onto the upper pan from the back going through the tranny housing.
Besides that if you have enough clearance you should be fine, obviously drain the oil and order a new o-ring for the dip stick.Leave a comment:

mines seeping oil pretty badly so i figure its come time to do it this winter. Ive read you loosen the motor mounts and lift the engine, but is there any other methods that may work better? Hoping this wont be a headache, and relatively straight forward
