does anyone have photos/info for a good heat shield setup for a cone filter or is stock filter better? i bought the car with a cone filter but i feel like i'm just sucking in hot hair..

IMO, and this is *my* opinion, I think cone filters are hot garbage. BMW seems to put a lot of thought in to their systems so I typically use those.
As you noted, most 'cold air' systems arent truly cold air intakes.

Plus you have the issue with K&N filters often times being neglected and eventually letting more gunk and dirt in your system and scoring your cylinder walls. For what? 5 ponies of gain, best case? Likely case you get 0 to loss of gains and worse dirt and debris filtration.

      Mine too.

The stock airbox is a cold air intake. On I6 cars, it's been dyno proven to perform better than a cone filter (hot air) intake. I wouldn't imagine the I4 cars are any different in that regard.
