I know it is a very old thread but I am having the exact same symptoms. Which plug was this? Do you happen to have a picture?

If memory serves, this was a small harness/plug in the passenger side near the firewall on the engine side. Believe it was meant for colder climate M42 cars but not US cars.

Thank you for the prompt reply. My car is a 316i M40 (1990) EUR. It has the CAT preparation but no cat or O2 sensor, just the wiring. Just going to check it now.
