I have a 318is and a M20 engine. Based on what you guys wrote I can go ahead and swap the M20 in and use my current drive train? Am I right?

And related to ^^^ an M50 will mount to my M42 sedan's trans as well, right?

Not suggesting it's a good idea btw. Or that I'm going to do it asap either. Purely academic.

                      Threadjack.

How about using m50 transmission with m42 engine to achieve close ratio?

Will m50 transmission line correct with m42 engine or will it be angled? Will any existing driveshaft work or do I have to manufacture special shaft from eta/td/m3 pieces?

the e36 tranny would fit, not sure about what driveshaft it would need though. The block design of the m42 and m50 are pretty much the same so the angles are = also.

And yes the 318 tranny can handle the power of an m50, they are rated at 240lbs of tq. Although I did just loose 1-4 on my tranny a few days ago but that was due to it having close to 300k on it. It had trouble getting into 1st when it was cold before it went on the m50. I knew it was on its last leg but I decided to get my $ out of it.
