In December, after replacing the steering rack, I moved my (soon to be “for sale”) 318is project car out to the driveway, nose out on a slight down grade. Right before parking, I revved it pretty good and it spit some nasty rusty snot about 5 feet out the exhaust onto the garage floor. Next project was to repair the speedo sensor wiring, which had weathered away.
Now the starter spins, but there is no spark. I have a spark tester and also connected a timing light to verify.
At first, I thought it might be a fuel problem. I added a few gallons of gas since it was low. I tested and swapped the fuel relays with spares, even swapped the fuel pump with a working unit to no avail. Last night I checked the resistance at the crank and cam sensors (at the connector) and got good readings according to the Bentley manual. I also swapped in a spare coil pack, still no spark. My last resort was switching the ECU with another working unit. I am stumped!
The Motronic stomp test gives me a 1444 code, which IIRC means all clear.
The car has been sitting on jack stands the better part of two years before, but I would start it occasionally just to keep the batter charged. It’s been blocking my good 318is from getting out of the garage!
Do you have any ideas for me before I have it towed off for service?
Thanks,
Shaun
