Help With Parts List -- M42 Intake Manifold R&R...

    Hey folks,

My '91 318i has about 275,000 miles and there are currently two issues which bug me: an on-again/off-again fuel leak (no drips, only smells) and a stalling problem.

Kellie has a suspicion that the fuel leak is under the intake manifold somewhere, and in any event there are a few hoses (vacuum and otherwise) in that area showing signs of cracking, so we've decided to pull the intake manifold and replace all of the gaskets/hoses/etc. next weekend.

I'd appreciate suggestions you guys may have as far as seals/hoses/etc. to replace "while we're in there". I know next to nothing about M42s, as all 8 of my previous E30s have been M20s.

    Thanks!

    Ben

Be sure to do both the intake gaskets. On one of mine had a fuel leak under there. There are 2 sections about 30-40mm of fuel line. Common leak on m42s. Check and clean or replace the ICV too.

Good time to do the coolant hose bypass.
Check all the vacuum hoses in that area.
Check the pastic coolant pipe for leaks.

I just did this about a month ago. Here's a good thread on deleting the Throttle Body heater along with the unnecessary hoses that tend to cause leaks.

And here's some pictures of how I ran mine. I used mostly stock replacement vacuum lines with a couple changes for the delete.

Most likely every vacuum line will need to be replaced:
        Crankcase to TB
        ICV to Intake Boot
        FPR to TB

        Black Plastic coolant pipe too!

You may also want to get a new TB gasket (or 2 if you don't delete heater plate). Also a good time to inspect all the wires in the black plastic box beneath the manifold.

woohoo, the rats nest... replace all those crazy hoses under the intake mani, and replace both the gaskets on the 2pc intake manifold. also, i never seen an m42 that didnt have a cracking intake boot.

Take out the injectors and have them cleaned & checked.

Delete that factory coolant check valve against the firewall...known for failure.

I did a pretty basic writeup replacing all the cooling hoses.
