Car won't start when engine is cold--Advice?

I bought a '91 318is about 2 months ago, and earlier this week, I just started having trouble starting it. When the engine is cold and I turn the key to start, the engine doesn't turn over. It sounds like it starts to turn over but completes maybe a half cycle, and then cuts out. After doing this about 5 or so times, the car will start, but shakes a bit until the engine warms up. I also noticed a lot of smoke (white/gray in color) from the exhaust until the car has been running for a while. If the engine is warm, the car starts normally. I have no warning lights whatsoever.

Any advice about what could be causing the problem and what I can do about it?

Could be anything from a blown head gasket to vacuum lines, i'd start with the vacuum lines. http://www.m42club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2742
