    Shifter rubs Driveshaft

I installed a rebuilt motor into my 325i and everything buttoned up nicely. I'm using a short shifter I purchased from CARR a couple years ago. Never had problems before, but now the selector rod on the shifter rubs the top of the drive shaft. The problem only occurs in R-1-2 when the rod is closest to the top of the drive shaft.

I minimized the rubbing by placing some washers between the tranny mounts and the body, but I'm a little stumped by what has changed. Obviously something has moved, but this car goes together like Legos and there's really little room for adjustments.

    Any ideas?

If you have the harmonic balancer on your driveshaft, remove it.

I had the same issue when I installed a new driveshaft, then had to disassemble all that crap again.

Also did you try checking the rear mount for the shifter carrier? what i notice sometimes is that after removing my shift knob and then pushing it back on (factory style knob) the force of pushing down on the shifter rod moves everything down, bending the rearmost section of the shifter carrier. all it takes is a long prybar to move it back into place.
the clearance is so tight because i have a M-coupe shifter and still have the balancer on my driveshaft. after installing the shifter my selector rod rubbed against the harmonic dampener, and instead of removing it i just bent the selector shaft to clear

How hard is this to do? I am about to go nuts with my bent shift select rod and a oem short shifter but I have not been able to find a decent writeup on how to take it out.
