    Clutch Problem

    Hey folks,

(I posted this on BCBimmers.com but wanted to see what others think)

Just looking to get some input based on my experience with the 325i so far. I purchased the car almost 2 weeks ago from a friend of a friend who let the car sit in storage for a long period of time. He insured it maybe a week before I bought it and it was only driven maybe once or twice. I learned that the clutch on particularly older German cars are stiff/heavy so it was a real change coming from an MR2.

A week goes by and I've noticed the clutch to feel softer and not as heavy/stiff or heck, for the sake of arguement, feel like a sack of bricks as it once was. I do recall when I first started to drive it, it felt like I was learning how to drive standard all over again. The engagement point was hard to get used to and the car would lurch/jump/dance especially in 1st and shifting itnto 2nd. Not so much 3rd/4th/5th gears.

I'm starting to get very paranoid that something's wrong with my clutch hydraulics and/or my clutch is slipping somewhere. I tested it by going up a hill (not as steep as I wanted to) putting it in 3rd and then shifting into 5th, flooring it, but no sign of slippage. I even put the car into 3rd at a stop, slowly ride the clutch in and out to see if the car would move, it did and when I let go of the clutch, it would stall instantly (not a good idea but whatever.) When driving, it feels like I have to give it a lot of gas in order for it to go so it seems like it's lost that original pep it once had when I first bought it. God forbid me but it feels like I'm driving a 4 cylinder Honda Civic DX.

When starting in 1st from a red light, it feels too smooth to get into gear, not like how I first got the car which is why I'm paranoid. I had another E30 owner try the clutch out and mentioned it was spongy/soft and I'll have to agree. I don't see any signs of leaks until I get under the car to see if the slave is leaking. I don't know when the last time the brake fluid was changed. Any input/help? Thanks!

Any fluid loss under the dash? Could be the master is leaking. How's the fluid level in the brake resevoir? In case you didn't know there isn't a seperate resevoir for the clutch system, there is a line that feeds the clutch master from the brake resevoir. You might want to see if there's enough fluid. If not that could be where your air is coming from.
If your friend didn't mention it, you should get a Bentley's manual it's an exellent tool to help keep your BMW alive.

Hmm..I don't notice any loss under the dash. How do I check for it?

I've yet to check the master so that's next on the list. Fluid in the resevoir is in the middle between MAX and MIN.

So I brought the car to my friend's shop. Turn's out applecran was right - the old brake fluid sat for just way too long and it collected water and was really no good. Also, visually, it looks like the fluid was sitting between "max" and "min." Turns out that if I turn, the brake fluid would slosh around and the nipple/hose that goes into the clutch master sucked air in causing the clutch lines to have air sucked in.

Bleeding the brakes and clutch was tough but managed to get through. Works like a charm now! Thanks everybody! :)
