Driveshaft collar issue

I'm bolting in the driveshaft in my Auto to Manual swap. Everything bolted up fine the first time but for various reasons I had to take it back out. Now when I go to bolt it in I can't get the threads of the back half of the driveshaft to connect with the collar nut just behind the CSB. The drive shaft is bolted to the diff and the transmission without problems

There is a 1/4 to 1/2 inch of distance between the threads and the nut. Should the nut slide back towards the threads? It looks like the back half of the driveshaft should slide on the splines towards the CSB. Are there any tricks to this? Everything seemed to bolt up fine the first time...

when I put mine back in it was tricky but I figured out you have to put it in as one piece and I put the back in first and just played with it a little until it worked
