Recently (2 months ago) I put in a used driveshaft I got from a reputable BMW parts place (i.e. 6 month warranty). I put it in and all was good but lately it has developed a definite 'clink' sound when rolling in neutral.
With the clutch in it doesn't make the noise much but when rolling in neutral it makes the noise and IS speed dependent. I believe the clink is there at speed too but it is rotating too quickly for it to be noticeable.
I got under the car and near the guibo have turned the driveshaft by hand and it clinks at EXACTLY the same spot each time I rotate it. What is weird is that I can't go an inch clock wise and then an inch counter clock wise to instigate the clink but need to go at least 3/4 to a full revolution for the clink to come, almost like it is "loading up."
The sound is similar to taking a small screw drive and tapping the hollow driveshaft. It sound like it is right at the joint of the tranny and DS, but could easily be further up the DS the way sounds travel in a tube. NOTHING is touching the DS in the tunnel and when installed I properly preloaded the CSB.
I should also mention that it appears to have NO bearing on the driveability of the car (errr, yet). No major vibrations, shifts nicely, clutch engages fine, etc.
Any ideas before I send it back to get another one? Could the CSB be gone (it was new).
Thanks!
- Oh and I searched FOREVER (here and on other cars in general and didn't find anything this specific)
