How to test transmission from junkyard?

How do you test/check a used transmission from the junkyard?

    See if it has oil.
    What color is that oil?
Is there glitter in the oil?
    Does it go into gears?

It won't have oil -- all fluids are drained in the first step of processing.

But you might be able to get a little sample.

Shift through all of the gears, and verify that the output shaft moves when you turn the input shaft. That's about all that you can do.

The input shaft will have some angular play, but shouldn't move in and out. The output shaft should have less play.

When you turn the input shaft should you hear any noises from the input out output shaft bearings? My current tranny you can hear the bearings and there is a slight knocking noise when you spin input shaft coming from inside the tranny.
