Now, according to ETK, 323i came with a sport box, G245 part # 23001209901 and a G260, part # 23001220372. Any more info regarding the ratios of these gearboxes would be greatly appreciated, perhaps someone the speaks german and can look for sites/info there.

This I found on the internet:

Here are the gear ratios for the 323i dogleg:

    323i 5-Speed Sport Gear Box:
    Getrag 245/11 OO BJ
    Gear ratios
    1st - 3.764
    2nd - 2.325
    3rd - 1.612

    5th - 1.000

    Found it here:

This all is about a gearbox from a e21, I don't know if the later version G245 for the e30 is the same...

    Update...

    G260 from a 323i sucessfully installed! :)

The old box was from a 318is, it couples with a M42, not a M20, therefore all the mess and inconveniences I mentioned on this thread due to the different engines tilt angles.

This time the transmission mounts and cross member fitted perfectly!

Car feels faster on 2nd and 3rd as well, also the shifter feels good, without excessive play, I installed a short shifter as well.

Thanks for the help, hope this thread helps others...

I bought a G260 from a 323i, with shorter ratios on 1st, 2nd and 3rd, compared to the G260 of the 325i. The info I was looking for regarding the ratios is in the E30 Restauration Bible.

If my mechanic has time next week we will instal it. :D

    Oh really?

I thought it was as in the diff ratios, a 4.10 LSD is shorter than a 3.73 LSD, now I am confused...

other way around. the 260's gears are longer. Bigger the number, the longer the gear in this case.

I checked the gear ratios of both boxes and this is what I found:

    G240: 3.72 / 2.02 / 1.32 / 1.00 / 0.81 / 3.45

    G260: 3.83 / 2.20 / 1.40 / 1.00 / 0.81 / 3.71

    Source: http://e30world.com/specifications/BMW-E30-specs-table

It seems that the G260 has shorter ratios on 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The data I found is from the G240 of a 318i, I tried to find from a (Euro only) 320i to check if the ratios are different but found nothing, what do you think?

well if you get the tilted motor mounts, I think you don't have to change anything. So just get new motor mounts for a 320 and be happy!

    euro 320s came with 240s
Since I live in Costa Rica, there are several 320's imported from Europe by the dealership. Actually my dad has a 320, I'll check that.

Shorter 1st and 2nd, well I can live with that, hehe.

I'm going to find the right cross member, but also I think I'll need to bend the linkage to compensate more especially at the shifter.

I can't wait to instal these beauties!!!:

euro 320s came with 240s. it has a shorter first and second gear to make up for the lack of hp.

I think the drive shaft is the same. I don't remember. You can get euro 320i engine mounts that will tilt your motor enough to sit right on your cross member. That would probably be the easiest fix for you. Or I guess an M42 cross brace?

^ Yeap, that sounds just right.

    Ok, update...

    This is a G260 from an E30 325i:

This is a G240 from an E30 318i. check the red circle, an "anchor point"

Now, this is what my E30 has, looks like a G240, notice the same "anchor point" close to the Getrag, which is something the G260 lacks. Sorry for the crapy pics.

    Other pics:

So, I found out the correct # that a G260 for 325i must have (since there are various G260's): 260.0.1346.90, source: http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=109919

Is the G240 shorter than the G260? Should be since its from a 4 cilinder bimmer. What about the flywheels, heavier the one from the G240 or not? In your opinion what would be the more "sport" oriented box?

    Thx...

could be but someone would have had to go through a bunch of trouble to swap it in. Like twist your shift linkage and do a euro throw our bearing.

I have another option: my E30 has a Getrag 240 (from the E30 318i), I was comparing pics on the web of both transmissions: 240 and 260 and I think I have the wrong one on my car.

Also, I read on m42club.com that this is a possible swap, however both boxes have different angle of tilt, also different length driveshafts.

I'll upload a pic of whatever gearbox my car has and compare it.

What do you think? I am losing it, hehe, or what I am saying actually makes sense?
